The LEAD Initiative: Accelerated learning for Leadership Skills

In order to support China’s emerging leaders to reach their full potential faster, Small Steps (China) Ltd. and Machwürth Team International have together created The LEAD Initiative.

With the relatively recent development of China’s economy, leaders in China are on-average 10 years younger than those in comparable positions in Western countries. Large expectations are placed on people with limited experience in a fast-changing economy.

More than ever before, China’s leaders are required to excel in strategic thinking, creative problem- solving, cross-cultural management, developing high-performance in teams and individuals, and increasing awareness of social responsibility, while keeping a clear head in stressful times. This is a lot to expect from China’s talented and up-and-coming executives.

The LEAD Initiative turns the traditional concept of leadership upside down.

Instead of conceptual learning as the beginning of a development program with the application to the workplace after the learning, we integrate learning and application to the workplace within the Experiment phase, which forms the core of our program.

The Experiment, consisting of a Community Project, Experiential Activity or Adventure, assesses the participants’ current leadership skills and accelerates their ability to adapt appropriately to a changing work environment.

The most important aspects of any training program- and yet the aspects that are often least accomplished- are ensuring that new learning is transferred to the workplace. The LEAD Initiative model ensures effective transfer of new learning to the workplace in every phase.

In order to further develop the participant’s leadership sills in the workplace, The LEAD Initiative provides on- the-job coaching. Through setting tangible goals and actions participants are held accountable for actively applying and further developing the newly acquired skills, insights, behaviors and strategies in the workplace.

This coaching helps to address obstacles, challenges and issues that participants encounter once they start implementing their action plans in the workplace.
